Collecting toby Jugs
June 10th, 2010
Toby jugs and mugs are full bodied figures and aren’t the same as character jugs which only show the head and shoulders. The initial Toby Jugs, with a brown salt glaze, originated and popularised by Staffordshire potters in the 1760s. It’s considered to be a progression of similar Delft jugs that were produced in the Netherlands. Today, their popularity shows no signs of waning and so they hold their value at auction sales. The ambitious and keen collector will try to find them all, but as the range continues to expand the task becomes more daunting. The American Toby Jug Museum is found on Chicago Avenue in Evanston in Illinois.
